What is Prosthodontics and who can benefit from our care?
Prosthodontists are dental restorative specialists with expertise in repairing worn or broken teeth and replacement of missing teeth with artificial, life-like substitutes.
Prosthodontics involves several different aspects of dental care and can be classified in the following manner:
Fixed Prosthodontics typically involves crown (cap) restorations to restore the appearance and function of one or more teeth. The crown restoration may be part of a fixed (permanent) bridge replacing missing teeth.
Removable Prosthodontics involves the fabrication of removable bridgework which utilizes tooth and/or gum support. Partial or complete dentures are the most common forms of treatment with variations including implant-supported dentures dentures and attachment-retained overdentures.
Implant Prosthodontics incorporates principles from both disciplines of fixed and removable prosthodontics in conjunction with the use of bone-anchored implants. The treatment course involves an implant placement phase, healing phase, and restorative treatment phase.
Maxillofacial Prosthodontics covers several categories of patient care starting with prosthetic treatment of congenital cranio-facial or speech defects and extending to prosthetic rehabilitation for trauma or oncology related cranio-facial defects.
